AFC Wimbledon 1 – 0 Enfield Town

The Dons returned to Plough Lane on Sunday after a spell away from our home ground due fixture congestion and the away FAWNL Plate Semi Final. We faced off against Enfield Town who gave us a tough test in the reverse fixture in January however we went into the game keen to extend our fine run of form which has seen us remain unbeaten in the league since August. Less than 10 minutes gone there were worrying signs for the Dons as Ashlee Hincks came off with an injury and was replaced by Jessica Lewry. Jess almost had an instant impact however her chip ended up on the roof of the net. The rest of the first half was a scrappy affair with neither team creating any clear cut chances.

The Dons thought they had yet again had a perfect start to the second half when Steph Mann had a shot from close range which was scrambled towards goal. The Dons, convinced they had taken the lead, started celebrating only for the referee to say it had not crossed the line. Despite being at the other end of the table to us, Enfield kept creating chances and forced Faye Baker into a fine save to keep the game goalless. 10 minutes into the second half Wimbledon took the lead thanks to an unlikely source as Dons captain Hannah Billingham fired an absolute rocket into the top corner with her weaker right foot. The rest of the game was low on chances as Wimbledon closed out a 1-0 win.

In their next game the Dons are back at Carshalton with league leaders Hashtag United visiting on Sunday 20th with a 2pm kickoff. We are next at Plough Lane on Wednesday 30th March with a 7.45 kickoff as Actonians visit.

First team coach Andy May said “It was a game more about our character and our personality, we had to work hard and dig in deep, we didn’t play the football that we know we can but once again its that character, that hunger, desire to want to win the game so theres pleasing stuff but theres also aspects that we need to look at to make sure the footballing standards are back to what we need.”

El Sueno Tequila player of the match Hannah Billingham said “It was a difficult game, credit to Enfield they came at us and made it hard. We know that ourselves we didn’t play as well as we could as well as we have in the past. Off the back of a good win last week we are a bit disappointed with our performance but three points is three points and that is all that matters really,”
