On the back of the Lionesses fantastic victory in the Euro 2022, we have received a lot of messages that now is the time for AFC Wimbledon Women to play in Wimbledon permanently.
Last season, we played 8 league and cup games at The Cherry Red Records Stadium, Plough Lane. These games were nothing but excellent. We scored 22 goals and only conceded 6. We won 7 out of 8 games. The players thrived, but best of all, the team had the chance to connect with the supporters in a completely different way.
We would be lying if we said it didn’t matter where we play. Of course it does. We had the foresight and vision to know that playing in Wimbledon (rather than going back and forth between there and Carshalton) is key to our growth. Sponsors need crowds and we need a permanent home.
Women’s football is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK. You can tell by the many parents who message saying their daughters want to play. You can tell by the many families that come down watch our women’s first team play in Wimbledon. You can tell by the 300 girls playing football for the club, all who look up to our first team as role models. There is excitement about the prospects for women’s football.
But we also know that if you can’t see it, it is hard to dream that you can be it.
Subject to pitch wear, this season, we will play as many games as possible at The Cherry Red Records Stadium, Plough Lane. We’re in constant conversation with the men’s club and the grounds staff to make that happen.
But no matter where we play – come and support us! We are completely volunteer run, we’re hugely successful, and this season we’re pushing for promotion.
